I absolutely love this blog thing! It's so much fun reading all your posts! You guys remind me of books that I had forgotten about and get me excited about reading new books. I CANNOT WAIT for Breaking Dawn to be released. I'll probably pre-order it, so I can get it right away! :) Of course, if you're in 2B, you SAW how excited I was and you HEARD how excited Miss Tuggle is, too!
Speaking of teachers, Mrs. Bailey read Life As We Knew It (sorry, still can't do italics) & LOVED it! I'm trying to get her to post her reaction here...
Now, Johnny reminded me of books that I haven't thought of in quite some time... He mentioned Grapes of Wrath in his post. I tried Grapes of Wrath a number of years ago & had a REALLY hard time b/c the first dozen pages or so (at least it seemed that long) was about a turtle in the dirt and I could NOT get past that! I LOVE John Steinbeck! He's a great writer and I have LOVED his other books - East of Eden (Eli read that), The Pearl (Adam read that) & Of Mice and Men. Mice & Men was one of my favorite books in high school! Thank you, Mrs. Gibbs, for making me read that! I'm actually really glad that I had teachers that forced me to read the other classics in high school because I probably wouldn't have read them otherwise. Maybe that's why I push you guys to read books from that College Bound List so hard...
So in high school I wasn't forced to read as much as I would've liked (in hindsight), but these are the ones I did read & I LOVED them:
- Lord of the Flies
- The Great Gatsby
- The Awakening
- Huckleberry Finn
But my ALL TIME FAVORITE, the book that I loved the most, I read in 9th grade English and it was A TALE OF TWO CITIES. You know, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." Such a great book by Charles Dickens. I don't know if they still read it in high school, but it's something that you should all check out sometime. Don't let the fact that Dickens wrote it scare you. It's about a great romance, a love rejected, and the French Revolution. Love & war! What more could you ask for?!?
Now you all have me on this serious reading bug... I cannot stop reading! Right now I'm into EAT, PRAY, LOVE but there are at least a dozen or so books that I'm hoping to get to ASAP: The Wizard of Earthsea, two novels by Ann Rinaldi, Breaking Dawn (thanks, Yang!), the sequel to Life As We Knew It (I forget the title), A Thousand Splendid Suns, etc. There are also a TON of books that I want to re-read AFTER I finish all the new ones, two of them are The Grapes of Wrath & The Heart of Darkness. I figured after all these years I should probably give them another shot. Maybe I'll like them/finish them this time. :)
What books are you planning to read this summer???? (19 school days left, I think.)

hey again guys! i forgot to add that "the giver" by lois lowry is incredible!! a lot of you have probably read it but you might not know that its a trilogy- "gathering blue" and "the messenger" go with it. the messenger definitely should be read after the other two. i read gathering blue first, then giver, then messenger, but as long as you read messenger last it doesn't really matter.
OH! I read The Pearl too~! =]
...and I'm reading Lord of the Flies right now.
I CANNOT believe Ms. McN didn't know there was Breaking Dawn coming out! Joyce was like, "!!!!!". Haha.
Another thing, if you go to Stephenie Meyer's website, she posted the first chapter of MIDNIGHT SUN--Twilight told by Edward's POV~! I must say, it was very...interesting, I can't wait till it comes out [I believe Stephenie said she was going to work on it more after Breaking Dawn comes out.]!
^o^
my favorite books this year were probably Speak (Laurie Halse Anderson) and Lonesome Dove (Larry McMurtry). i'm in the process of reading Life as We Knew It (Susan Beth Pfeffer), but i haven't really had much time.
Lonesome Dove was surprisingly good. I think it's probably my favorite book, even took a while to get into, but then again, it's a pretty big book. to carlo: yeah, the ending was a little sudden... i'm reading the whole series now, starting with Dead Man's Walk which i'll be starting when i finishe Life as We Knew It. the movie/miniseries didn't exaclty go with the book, but they did a pretty good job, and i thought the ending was really sad.
Speak was amazing. the movie is also not bad, but there are some missing parts. i really love how it was written. even thoguh the main story behind it was kinda depressing, there were lots of Life as We Knew It is pretty good so far (Miranda's a swimmer!)
Okay I read Golden Compass and it has a really great plot so anyone wanting a good book should read it.
The main characters Lyra is a wild young girl who starts the beginning of an adventure by stopping her uncle from drinking poison. Read more to find out what happens.

eh... (emma,) for some reason the giver didn't suit me... i got a bit bored. thinking back, the story line seemed really interesting but there was something about it that just prevented me from getting hooked.
I am about 2 pages away from finishing Lonesome Dove (after 5 months) and I feel quite accomplished. It was really weird reading this book. Whenever I wasn't reading it, I told myself that it was boring and that I didn't want to start reading it. But then, after I actually lied in bed and read, I REALLY enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. i think that I told myself that a book on cowboys wasn't interesting-- WRONG!! I ended up really liking the book and my character faves are gus, newt, po campo, and clara. I am contemplating whether or not to read the second... perhaps I will in the summer when i have time to procrastinate and when finishing the book doesn't count for a grade =)
my favorite book ever is Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson it is a weird scifi book about a computer virus/ real world drug gone crazy. it is awesome!!!!
dawg house is orion
DON'T ASK
I would kindly ask *COUGH* lauratheexplorer, polly *COUGH* to teach the general public how in the world do you bold or do italics on this blog thing.
ok so i jus figured out how to get on so evry one is talking about how twilight is such an amazing book but im still reading it ppl say u get soo attached to it but i mean its not all that and a bag of chips but maybe when i finish it ill love it some more just maybe...
OH MY GOSH MS MCNEELEY! LIFE AS WE KNEW IT IS SO FRIKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
Old Man in Th Sea by heminigway was really good and i couldent put is down. After Reading it i went and got to have and have not also by heingway which is also really good. It is about a man who is basically put out of busniss by some rich snob and now has to transport controband from cuba to key west.
so I read Catch-22 for CBRL, and I liked it b/b it was hysterical. But I kinda want to read something deeper to end the year. Any suggestions that you think I would like that I could get on read to close out the year?
hey guys!
eliza- yeah THE GIVER is definitely an odd book (but i still love it!) but my personal favorite of the series is GATHERING BLUE b/c i think the main character is more interesting and has more depth than jonas in THE GIVER is.
this is sort of off the whole book topic, but has anyone seen a good movie version on shakespeare's ANTHONY AND CLEOPATRA? (i am doing the monologue from it)
several people have been commenting about the book SPEAK. I read it last year and I agree that the writing style is good but i found it hard to get past how depressing it was, so i didnt really enjoy it. does anyone know if the author has written any other books?
The Golden Compass was pretty good, but the other two books in the series, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, weren't that great. I guess they went a little too far.

Oh yeah Catch 22 is pretty funny.

I absolutely L-O-V-E-D the Twilight series!! I didn't really think that so many Clarke Middle people read them. I know 7th graders did (can you spell obsessive?(too bad I was one of them too:-(.)) But I am still waiting for Breaking dawn AND the movie to come out!!! I had the books FOREVER but thought they would be boring and didn;t read them, but when I ran out of books in my personal library, i decided to give them a try. I COULD NOT PUT THEM DOWN!!! I even got in some trouble in class for reading them. >.< I got really bored waiting for other books to come out, and I kept rereading them, and became a Twilight and Stephenie Meyer junky (I have already finished The Host by Stephenie Meyer!(obssessive, again!))

7th Grader
For this summer alot of you out there should really consider reading The Golden Compass. In my opinion It's one of the best books I'v ever read. I really wanted to see the movie and still do so totally read this book.
This is Sam. i really hate Bloggolglolgbbibing. i read "grapes of wrath" and didn't like it very much.
it seemed very black-and-white movie-ish with a theme that makes me think "1930s" and diologue that makes me think "corny". i really didn't get into it and haven't considered reading any other books by Steinbeck.
This is Baimodi I just wanted my book about Jimi Hendrix portrays too much of his personal life and I don't think all of his personal life should be in the book it is not our business unless if he wants us to know
the movie for golden compass SUCKED the book was good. yea.
anddd I had to pay $4 of my own money on the airplane to get earphones. One ear didn't work so the steward (is that was you say if it was a man?)
well he gave me another one, and only one ear worked on that one too, so instead of asking him for ANOTHER pair! I had to ask this old, old, old, super Southern, ancient lady if I could use her radio/plug so that i could use the functioning ear of both earphones. (she said yea, more like yyaaiiisss sweeetieee piiiiiiiiieee) and i watched the movie and it sucked.!
yea,
don't watch it if you haven't already painfully watched it; read the book!
-kate
ok this is katie googe from 7th grade adding my 2 cents
the golden compass is the best book in the world
surpassed only by the subtle knife and the amber spyglass
i am curious as to what (besides the antichristian themes) would make the last two books in the trilogy not as good as the the golden compass, as i found them more exciting and better written
ok that is my 2 cents
which you will probably disregard and hate me 4 it but that's ok
ps: have any of ya'll read the messenger
it is the final gathering blue/giver book adn it explains a lot but it is kinda depressing (great series btw!!)
I think a good book to read is the Maximum Ride Series!!! For sure, i couldn't put them down. There is six books to the site!!! I loved them...
